RUINS PROJECT

From the initial collaboration on the music side to the video production with Darren and Jeremy, this project was one of my absolute favorites. So I wanted to give you a quick look behind the curtain at the process... both the music and the video.

Darren King and Jeremy Lutito are not ordinary composers. These instrumental pieces will create stunning audio landscapes for your visuals to thrive, with haunting and addictive rhythmic hooks.

MEET THE COMPOSERS

Darren King (Mutemath, Kanye West) and Jeremy Lutito (Leagues, Nike) are not ordinary composers...

These world-renowned drummers and multi-instrumentalists are true masters of melody and rich analog texture.

It was an absolute dream come true to work with these incredibly talented producers... bringing a new audio experience to the big screen, while also getting to create some of our own visuals in the process.

THE VIDEO: A HAPPY ACCIDENT

The video production process for this project ended up being one of my all-time favorites. And really, it was a bit of a series of “happy accidents.” We wanted to rent a massive LED wall. But because of the expensive nature of a shoot like that, we also packed in a ton of different shoots during the 2 days for which we had rented it.

Over 36 hours in that space, we shot a short passion project film (*coming soon*), new masterclass content, and more. We went all out and landed about 8 hours of incredible footage. It was a dream team with every toy you could hope for. But I knew we were going to push the limits of how many unique looks we could get out of the LED wall before everything started to blend together and feel the same.

So I started wondering how we could push our time with Darren and Jeremy into a new place — the final shoot of the 2 days. And rather than focusing on creating new tour visual content, I wanted to see how we could dress the whole set more... to get more depth and texture from the room as a whole.

All of this sparked a wild idea inspired by one of my favorite films of all time, Tron Legacy. More specifically, the scene: “Flynn’s Arcade.” I have always loved the tone of that scene... the idea that all this incredible technology had been left to decay and remain untouched for so long.

And from a production standpoint, the beautiful diffusion of the lights under the plastic curtains was such a unique approach that has stayed with me ever since. So I wondered how we could do the same thing, but on a larger scale. I loved the idea of draping such a massive and expensive piece of technology as an LED wall with plastic. Almost leaning into the idea of Ruins... that this technology would appear “impressive at the time” if seen from the future after being left to decay. We pulled off this set change in record time thanks to an incredible crew, including my team Ben Crosson, Matt Cross and Jillian Cohen.

And in the process, Jillian pointed out how incredibly cool it was to have the scissor lift in front of the wall and the curtains. So we knew we had to figure out how to integrate it somewhere into the night.

RUINS is a collection of otherworldly sounds inspired by films such as BladeRunner, Tron and Annihilation.

NAMES YOU NEED TO KNOW — AND PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW

For those who have been following me for a while, you know the name Jeremy Lutito. From our earliest moments collaborating remotely on the music and videos for Cody Carnes 3 years ago... to a year-long project working with him as producer on my wife Elle Azar’s masterpiece album here in Nashville... to countless other scores for projects in between... Jeremy has quickly become my favorite composer and producer.

His unique approach, attention to detail and love for analog texture have always made it easier to create visuals. And I am not the only one who thinks so — remember that Nike commercial that went viral this year? Yes, that was him too. Then there is Darren King. And where do I even begin? You may remember him as the wild drummer from the band Mutemath. Or perhaps you recognize his hooks on Kanye West’s “Real Friends”... or Travis Scott’s “Piss on Your Grave.” Whether you know his name or not, the fact is that Darren is one of the most talented musicians in the world. He is responsible for some of the most inspiring percussion and production I have ever seen. And I have literally listened to him since I was 10 years old... So you can imagine how incredibly excited I was when I had the opportunity to collaborate on this exclusive project with both of them. This would be their first time working together... and of course the first time the three of us worked together. And I was beyond excited.

THROWING PAINT

It all started with a phone call to talk together about possibilities and potential directions. And what I loved was that, rather than trying to lock down a specific number of songs... or even a specific genre or reference point... Darren and Jeremy simply wanted to start “throwing paint at the wall,” so to speak, from a musical point of view.

To get into the studio together, start playing, find what inspired them day after day... and create something fresh from that combination of ingredients.

Ultimately, the beautiful thing about a collaboration like this is that you automatically get something unique simply based on the combination of talents and perspectives involved. So the guys went away for a few months and did their thing.

Jeremy’s studio is filled with musical toys ranging from old synths like the Crumar to random percussion instruments and analog effects pedals to process everything, such as Space Echoes and distortion boxes.

They are rarely “in-the-box” — AKA MIDI-based samples in Ableton — and almost never a patchwork of Splice samples. More often than not, Darren and Jeremy use many more real organic sounds layered in original and inventive ways to further emphasize the haunting melodies and addictive rhythmic hooks they create.

Well, in the end, the guys landed on about 30 different “sketches” — ideas, directions and sound foundations to begin building from. Then came the chiseling, refining and mastering down to 8 incredibly cohesive yet diverse tracks in the collection. All the while... I listened to rough demos as they sent them over. And we started dreaming about what all of this could look like visually.

SHOOTING WITH THE EDIT IN MIND

From there, it was all about letting Sam Wiley, the extraordinary Movi operator, do his thing. And with the edit in mind, our goal was to capture takes that were strong enough for “oners,” or single-take music videos... but that we could also, of course, cut into multi-cut edits.

As always, Sam delivered in a big way — offering around 20 incredible continuous 3-minute shot options.

And it was the final shot of the night that brought all the pieces together in all their glory. With Sam on Movi, after figuring out how to set up the guys’ instruments on the lift... Ben lying on the floor behind the lift operating the buttons manually... Kirk Slawek laying down a thick bed of low ground fog and pulling focus... me manually triggering the Resolume visuals... and John Spencer running around with a leaf blower to push the smoke out... the final shot of the night ended up being the absolute best. Just before the LED wall died! haha

In the end, I could not be more excited about how this entire project came together. From the first call to the final edit, this team was an absolute pleasure to work with.
